With the new moe-wave (if you can call it that) that recently has reached our shores (we have shores here so it's just a figure of speech :3) I was wondering about what anime characters I really do like and why. For instance, what are the key characteristics that makes a character appeal to you? Is it how they behave? What they look like? Is it the world they are in? Perhaps the story?
Thinking out loud here:
Why does Saber from Fate/stay night fair better than Charlotte from Samurai showdown or Jeanne d'Arc from the PSP-game (with the same name) They all have an apperance composed of armour and blue and yellowish cloth

But it's only Saber that apparently sells like hot Haruhis(quote from dannychoo.com somewhere XD (if I remember correctly, maybe it's okay either way :3)). This is referring to figurines, I forgot to mention that. How do
they measure who is going to get figurinized in the first place?

Does Saber have an otaku-appeal-impact of 9/10 or something?
8/10?
And they have to measure against some demographical traits too.. How many of the customers like things that are kawaii vs. things that are kakkoii?
Anyhow, I would like to know which ones are your top 3 favourite anime characters

Mine are as follows:
1.Yukari Sensei from Azumanga Daioh (for beeing the most evil character evarr XD and uh teacher fetish thingie. Yup.)
2.Jo Carpenter from Bakuretsu Tenshi (she is somewhat akeen to beeing a closet lesbian Clint Eastwood, you cant go wrong with that..)
3.Noda Megumi from Nodame Cantabile (wich reminds me of me in some wierd way)
I'll make a list of everyones opinions later and post them here next month

Devious Comments
I saw all episodes of Fate/Stay Night, and Saber becomed in my favorite character, mainly because even when she's a strong girl, you can see she's also soft and fragile, that makes you think that even when she's a girl who can to protect you, you also can to protect her.
Actually I not see too much anime, s I only can tell you the name of my favorite character of the only one I see:
Blossom from Powerpuff Girls Z.

Sugoi Ramen! Huge guts! Yayy Swords!
I actually prefer stronger female characters, often with a devious or mean streak:
Yuko from XXXHolic - she's a witch, she's mysterious and mercurial and always looks incredibly stylish. Also, it's nice to have someone to drink with, but she does it way too much.
Lt. Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist - although she's way too involved in her worklife, she's really dedicated and passionate though she doesn't let it show.
...otherwise, I think I'll have to get back to you. I'm a little too tired for picking any more favs, haha.

Thanks for posting ^^
And I do think I agree with you. For some reason I like the types that come across as harsh or stoic more. They are hard on the outside but not in a tsundere type of way maybe. I wish there was a word for it, I have yet to find one :/
anyhow that's just my opinion

1.How the character personality is...cause that make a character.
2.THen how they interact with the other character and the role that they play.
Last, how a character looks....if the character can back up the 1 and 2 with a cool look im sold.
Meh
#1 Manaka from Ichigo 100%, this manga seriously gives me so much inspiration for working on my story writing and game making over all, and I really liked manak as a character over all, really could relate, or wished >_>
#2 Onizuka sensei from GTO, not much to say, the guy is awsome XD
#3 Hayate from Hayate the combat butler
females then would be Louise (zero), C.C. (Code Geass), Maria (Hayate)

I only got to get used of the Moe term from Lucky Star. I know they're mostly cute girls now, who shows a somewhat (unintentional) dependency signs, like always flustering and unable to do things on her own xD; Basically those that gives men the chance/urge to help her out and make a move? xD
I myself and a girl, but I think I'm somewhat bisexual xD I think I used to like a few moe characters some time back, but now I'm more interested in independant, strong, hero-like female characters like Jo from Bakuretsu Tenshi (ugh Megumi (?) was so totally annoying D8 ). She's not my absolute favourite tho but that could be because of Megumi xD
the female character I really like atm is Kirima Nagi from the movie version of Boogiepop Doesn't Laugh x3 She has very short hair (my moe x3) unlike her manga counterpart.
I also love Sailor Uranus. I think it's official that I'm bisexual xD
I think if I watch The Rose of Versailles I'd probably fall in love with Lady Oscar xD
OOooooh speaking of moe figurines, I just recalled a figurine I saw at a convention last year that I totally moe-ed over. Kureha from Shining Wind, a game I've never played. [link]
I absolutely love girl designs like hers. I think her expression (and long brown curls) is what made me moe-ed the most xD
I just saw that there's a new figurine of her where she looks happier and uhm... flirty? That didn't win me as much xD
...well that was a long comment xD

♂♂♂ Maybe you don't deserve that freedom yet, because you don't know how to handle the freedom of assumptions ♀♀♀
strong characters like Saber tend to appeal though ill be dammed if i can answer why XD (she is a cool chara).
though personally i like stoic charas there are pleanty of moe and varios other types that i like

You get a wonderful view from the point of no return.
if they are given human problems and put into situations where normal people wouldnt know how to react and then act believably, then that makes them more real to me
and id have to say my favorite character of all time would be lelouch vi britannia from code geass, many people make jokes of this show but the characters are all very well develpoted. ^^
